Oosteroever

A marked 3.5–4.3 km dune walk from Fort Napoleon past the Lange Nelle lighthouse and Atlantic Wall batteries to the beach.

About Oosteroever Dunes Walk

Cross the harbour on the free ferry and Ostend changes character completely. On the east bank, the Oosteroever, a marked walking route leads from Fort Napoleon through the dunes towards the Bredene border, passing the 65-metre Lange Nelle lighthouse and the Halve Maan and Hundius batteries of the Atlantic Wall along the way.

The route is 4.3 kilometres at low tide, when you can return along the beach, or 3.5 kilometres at high tide. It is partly paved and partly sandy, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Expect wide views over the sea and harbour, wind in your face, and a lot more space than on the main promenade.

The lighthouse is not open to visitors, but it is a fine sight from the dunes. Start or finish with a visit to Fort Napoleon or lunch at its brasserie. Note that harbour works currently interrupt part of the route, so follow the diversion signs.
