Parking in Ostend: Car Parks, Prices and Free Parking

Where to park in Ostend: car parks by the beach and centre with 2026 prices, free edge-of-town parking, street zones and how to pay without a fine.

Last checked 14 October 2026

Ostend is easy to reach by car, but parking in the centre is paid every day of the week, Sundays included, and the old town is split into zones you cannot drive straight through. The good news: there are plenty of car parks within a few minutes’ walk of the beach, and two large free car parks on the edge of town. Here is where to park, what it costs in 2026 and how to avoid a fine.

The short version

  • For the beach and promenade: Zeedijk, Kursaal 2 or Europacentrum car parks, all a short walk from the sand.
  • For the shops and the Wapenplein: Mijnplein car park, right in the centre.
  • For the fishing harbour and the Vistrap: Visserskaai car park, under the quay.
  • Cheapest: the free car park at Maria Hendrikapark (300 spaces) or the free car park on the Oosteroever, with the free ferry across the harbour.
  • Street parking is paid from 09:00 to 20:00 every day. Meters take cards and contactless only, no cash.

Car parks in the centre

Most central car parks are run by Indigo and are open 24 hours a day. Many recognise your number plate on entry, so there is no ticket to lose. Prices below are the operators’ published rates in October 2026; Indigo calls its online prices indicative, so check the board at the entrance. Booking ahead in the Indigo Neo app is usually cheaper.

Good to know about the car parks

  • Height limits are low in several garages: 1.80 m at the Zeeparking and Europacentrum, 1.90 m at Mijnplein, Visserskaai and Koninginnelaan, 2.10 m at Zeedijk and Kursaal 2.
  • Mijnplein: the open-air upper level is closed on Thursday mornings (07:00–13:00) for the market; the underground part stays open.
  • Zeedijk car park sits under the promenade about 50 metres from the beach and has 34 charging points and bike lockers.
  • Station car parks: if you arrive by train, the station car parks offer a reduced day rate for rail travellers; buy the day ticket in the SNCB app.

Free parking on the edge of town

If you do not mind a short walk, bus or boat ride, you can park for free all day.

  • Maria Hendrikapark (Graaf de Smet de Naeyerlaan / Mercatorlaan): 300 free spaces for cars, about five minutes’ walk from the Kapellestraat shopping street and close to the station. A centre bus runs every 30 minutes. No motorhomes or vans.
  • Oosteroever (Ankerstraat, by the coast road): a free car park on the east bank, close to the beach and Fort Napoleon. From there take the coast tram (until 18 December 2026 the Oosteroever stop is closed; use the temporary stop on the Dokter Eduard Morauxlaan), or walk to the free harbour ferry, which crosses to the Visserskaai in a few minutes.

The ferry runs daily. From 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 the first boat leaves at 07:45 and the last crossing back to the Oosteroever is at 17:55, with a short break at lunchtime. From April the boats run until about 20:45. It is free for pedestrians and cyclists and takes wheelchairs.

Street parking: zones and prices

On-street parking is paid from 09:00 to 20:00 every day, including Sundays and public holidays. Outside those hours parking is free. Look for the zone colour on the signs and parking meters.

Signposted short-stay bays near shops give you 30 minutes free. Never park in bays reserved for residents’ or care workers’ permits: cars in care workers’ bays are towed.

How to pay

  • Parking meters take bank cards and contactless payment (including Apple Pay and Google Wallet), but not cash. You type in your number plate, so there is no ticket to put behind the windscreen.
  • Apps: 4411, EasyPark and Seety all work in Ostend, each with a small service fee. Choose the right zone code (it starts with OOS) and check your number plate carefully.
  • SMS: after registering with 4411 you can text the zone code and your plate to 4411.
  • In the pink and grey zones apps do not work: register at the parking meter instead.

Driving into the centre

Since 2023 the historic centre has been divided into four zones. You cannot drive directly from one to the next; instead you loop round via the Leopold II-laan, Van Iseghemlaan, Visserskaai or Vindictivelaan. The practical tip is to pick a car park on the side of town you are heading for and walk the rest: the centre is compact.

Disabled parking

With a valid European disabled parking card displayed behind the windscreen, you can park free of charge in reserved disabled bays. Parking free on ordinary paid bays requires registering the card with handyPark (app or handypark.be) and starting a session each time; registration uses itsme or a Belgian eID, so visitors from abroad should call the parking desk on +32 59 65 06 75 for help. The station car parks have 21 disabled spaces between them, and several Indigo garages (Zeedijk, Kursaal 2, Sky, Koninginnelaan) list accessible facilities.

Motorhomes and campervans

There are dedicated motorhome parking spaces on the Mercatorlaan (8) and the Diksmuidestraat (6), but sleeping in a motorhome on public land in Ostend is not allowed. Motorhomes are not permitted in the free edge-of-town car parks or the garages. For an overnight stay, use a campsite or motorhome park, for example in Raversijde, Bredene or Middelkerke.

Electric cars

Most central garages have charging points, Zeedijk has 34 and Europacentrum 10, and at the Kinepolis car park parking is free while your car is charging. On-street charging bays may only be used while charging, for up to 4 hours during the day and without a time limit between 20:00 and 05:00; in a paid zone the parking fee applies on top.

Is there a low emission zone?

No. In 2026 Ostend has no low emission zone (LEZ); in Flanders only Antwerp and Ghent have one. If you drive through Brussels on the way to the coast, check the Brussels LEZ rules for your car.

Fines

Forget to pay or overstay, and you will be charged €40, which can be issued once in the morning (until 14:00) and again in the afternoon. Enforcement is by scan car, so the most common mistakes are a mistyped number plate or the wrong zone selected in an app. If you think a charge is wrong, you can dispute it online with the city.

Changes coming in 2027

Ostend is working on a new parking plan that is due to take effect in spring 2027. The proposals include a more expensive red zone in the historic centre, one hour of free parking in most other paid zones and cheaper day car parks. We will update this page when the new rules are confirmed.
