Deschildre Streekproducten is a family business that began as a butcher’s shop and has been making its own charcuterie since 1976. Today it runs a shop, tasting room and event space at the Vismijn, Ostend’s fish auction on Oosteroever, and it sells only Flemish regional products. The family says there are more than 50 kinds of its own charcuterie, from classic pâté to versions made with seaweed.
Alongside the meat counter you will find local cheeses, sweet and savoury West Flemish specialities, regional beers and alcohol-free drinks, seasonal products and gift baskets. You can taste something on the spot, sit on the terrace by the Vismijn in fine weather, or order a charcuterie, cheese or Flemish apero board to take away, which is handy if you are staying in an apartment. Breugel-style breakfasts and lunches are by reservation, and groups can book tastings, meals and workshops, including making dry sausages with Willy Deschildre.
Good to combine with a walk: the shop publishes a free route of about 6 km around Oosteroever that starts at its door and passes Fort Napoleon, the lighthouse and the Vindictive. There is free parking nearby. The shop is closed on Mondays, and it is worth ringing ahead before a special trip on a public holiday.
